Can I Become a Cop with Misdemeanors
My question involves criminal records for the state of: Indiana.
I live in Indiana, I was charged with Public Intoxication and Possession of Marijuana in November of 2010. I am currently on unsupervised probation until side by side November. My question is, can I become a Police Officer hither in Indiana with those ii charges or would I be better off relocating to another area? Patently my hands are tied so long as I am on probation, just once I'grand off probation and finished with higher it will have been 4 to five years after the fact. What exercise I need to practise in order to go a Police force Officer?

Re: Tin can I Become a Cop with Misdemeanors
Personally, I would call back most a different line of piece of work.
Yes, law departments may consider a person with a misdemeanor confidence, a better question is why would they? The number of people that want to become constabulary officers is and then large and the number of available slots is ever shrinking. Why wouldn't departments use previous criminal beliefs equally a mode to shorten the pile of applicants.
Peculiarly charges that display an inability to control yourself and a willingness to ignore the law.
I would consider other work.

Re: Can I Become a Cop with Misdemeanors
If you desire to become a police force officer, you can do a couple of things to amend your prospects.
Showtime, you should obviously consummate probation and stay out of trouble henceforth. I personally know of several current and retired police officers and FBI agents who did comparably stupid things (and worse) when they were in high school and/or in college. Fortunately, they straightened out their act, got good grades, graduated and afterward entered into police enforcement. If yous follow a similar path over the next few years, y'all can potentially relish a like career arc over the long term.
2d, once you have completed your probation, yous should explore expunging your misdemeanor conviction record. While most police force departments can and will still observe your expunged tape, you tin truthfully inform nigh other employers that yous practise not have a record at all once your conviction is expunged.
Third, I exercise not think moving helps you at all here. Law departments nationwide can readily discover your conviction tape. If you desire to pursue a career in law enforcement in Indiana or anywhere else in the United States, you volition need to lead an exemplary life (as a denizen, educatee and employee) in the coming years. Such an exemplary life can potentially overcome the obstacle created by your conviction.

It's not like I'one thousand a dealer it was a stupid determination that I made I paid the costs and I'g doing everything in my power to correct it. Honestly giving up isn't an option, for me to just say okay and throw in the towel wouldn't brand any sense. Anyone have a better answer so " Consider other work".

Re: Can I Go a Cop with Misdemeanors
Many applications inquire for convictions, even if expunged or sealed, and suspended imposition of sentences and other diversions. If they ask this you must reply.Quoting ESteele
Lying will be an accented bar.
Agreed, I guarantee that nearly departments will look at where y'all have lived and worked in the past to investigate your suitability.3rd, I practice not think moving helps yous at all here. Law departments nationwide tin can readily discover your confidence record. If you want to pursue a career in law enforcement in Indiana or anywhere else in the U.s., y'all will need to lead an exemplary life (as a denizen, student and employee) in the coming years. Such an exemplary life can potentially overcome the obstruction created by your conviction.

Re: Tin I Become a Cop with Misdemeanors
OP, thank you for your comments. However, I would respectfully urge you not to disparage other points of view, even if you disagree with another responder's contrary positions. The vast majority of responders earnestly offer their opinions based on their feel, knowledge and perspective.
With respect to the current availability of jobs in general and police recruit positions in item, hopefully the overall chore picture will burnish considerably by the time y'all graduate. Moreover, with their inherent turnovers, police departments volition undoubtedly continue to hire new recruits in the foreseeable hereafter. Over again, if you establish yourself equally being especially well qualified, you can overcome a tough job market or whatsoever other obstacle.
With regard to expungement, in many, if non all, states which let statutory expungement (i) an employee tin "truthfully" tell employers he does not have an arrest and/or a confidence which have been expunged; and (2) nearly employers cannot refuse to rent him based on an expunged criminal record. Meet eastward.g., Maryland Criminal Procedure 10-109. (Constabulary departments, though, are usually excepted under such laws, and can request data nearly expunged records.)

Re: Can I Become a Cop with Misdemeanors
Can yous become a peace officeholder? Yes. Will you become a peace officer? Not likely for a few years.Quoting BRoberts
While these convictions do not legally prevent you from employment as a peace officeholder, any prospective employer IS going to look hard at these convictions and the reports behind them.
The best way to put these behind you would be to Non violate whatsoever terms of your probation as well every bit to no longer use or be around people who use marijuana. You should also seek to cease all alcohol consumption and avoid people who tend to drink to backlog. You should complete that education with a high GPA and a BA/BS, establish a solid and steady work history, and do anything you can to demonstrate responsibility and delivery to the community, and avoid any further run-ins with the cops.
It volition probably have at least 4 to v years from the conclusion of probation for this to be a footnote rather than a headline in your life. Simply! I cannot emphasize enough that yous should avoid marijuana and even alcohol from at present on. If you have a PI on your record, and so a few years from now you are in groundwork somewhere and friends characterize you as a heavy or even moderate drinker who gets rowdy, stupid, or whatever when he drinks, then y'all can kiss that career adieu. Responsibility and maturity are primal here.

Re: Can I Become a Cop with Misdemeanors
I would suggest going to college for a degree that has good career opportunities ; why go to college and pay 250K to be a constabulary officeholder when a degree is not a requirement? I would forgo a career in law enforcement if y'all accept the opportunity to get a college caste. Why get to college, go a degree in something related to law piece of work merely to detect out that your conviction is a hill you cannot climb. Then that's 250K down the drain.Quoting BRoberts
